What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files a website stores on your device. Some are needed for a site to work; others, like analytics cookies, are optional and need your permission first.
Analytics cookies (only if you accept)
If you click Accept in the cookie banner, Google Analytics 4 sets these cookies so I can see which pages are useful, how people find the site and whether enquiries come through:
- _ga (Google Analytics): tells one visit from another. Expires after 2 years.
- _ga_<ID> (Google Analytics): keeps track of the current session. Expires after 2 years.
If you click Reject, or ignore the banner, these cookies are never set and nothing is sent to Google Analytics. Google Analytics 4 doesn't log or store IP addresses, and I don't use it for advertising.
Things that aren't cookies
- Your cookie choice: saved in your browser's local storage (
cookie-consent) so the banner doesn't keep reappearing. I ask again after six months. - Light or dark theme: saved in local storage (
theme) if you use the theme toggle. - Google Tag Manager: a script that loads Google Analytics, but only after you accept. It doesn't set cookies itself.
- Cloudflare Web Analytics: counts page views without cookies, fingerprinting or tracking you across sites. It only gives me totals, like how many people visited a page.
What I don't use
- Advertising, retargeting or remarketing cookies
- Social media tracking pixels
- Anything that follows you around other websites
Changing your mind
You can change your choice at any time. If you withdraw consent, the Google Analytics cookies are deleted straight away.
You can also clear cookies and local storage in your browser settings. The site works the same either way. For more on cookies in general, see aboutcookies.org.
